It's difficult to choose the best sites when there are so many to choose from, so here is the list of the best places to visit in Mexico to help you navigate the diverse land of cute chihuahuas, cheap tequila, and great tacos.

1. Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is Mexico's most impressive Mayan ruin, with immaculate gardens. This is one of Mexico's most popular day trips and may get very crowded, so if you genuinely want to visit Chichen Itza, consider staying nearby and getting there early to avoid the tour buses. If you plan a day excursion to view it, combine it with a swim in one of the neighboring Cenotes.

2. Mexico City

Mexico City is the country's massive, densely populated capital city. Mexico City is now a modern metropolis that seems to stretch for hours in any direction. However, just underneath the current city's surface are remains of its historical origins, such as the Temple Mayor, one of the great temples from the 13th-century Aztec metropolis of Tenochtitlan. The historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to many other attractions, including many museums.

3. Playa del Carmen

4. Zipolite

5. Uxmal

6. Cozumel

Isla Cozumel Island is only accessible by boat and is about 25 minutes via ferry from Playa del Carmen. It is one of Mexico's best islands, a popular stop for cruise ships, and one of the best sites in Mexico for diving.

Cozumel has the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, lovely sandy beaches, and pure natural regions like Punta Sur Eco Park. However, the best activities to do in Cozumel entail being in the water, as there is a whole new world to discover beneath the Caribbean Sea.

7. Nevado de Toluca

8. Tulum

Tulum is well known for its ancient ruins. While these aren't our favorite ruins in Mexico, they certainly feature the most spectacular setting of any Mexican ruins. Tulum's Mayans had the greatest seat in the house, perched atop high cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Aside from day tours to the ruins, the expanse of white sandy beaches draws travelers to Tulum.

9. Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is another popular and beautiful alternative for a taste of Mexican resort town living. It has the allure of Cancun on a smaller scale and is well-known for water sports and marine life. Puerto Vallarta is located on the Pacific coast and has its own distinct culture and cuisine that is not seen in the Yucatan.

10. Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas lies at the southernmost tip of Baja, California. Previously a sleepy fishing village, the city has been transformed into a popular resort destination. It is well-known for its beautiful beaches and as a party destination. Playa El Medano, the city's main beach, is a lovely stretch of sand surrounded by cafés and restaurants, with plenty of al fresco dining options.

11. Acapulco

12. Great Pyramid of Cholula
